El promotor de Filadelfia, J. Russell Peltz dijo que Rodríguez empezó a perder la conciencia una vez que se sentó en su esquina, después de que el combate fuese detenido en el décimo asalto,
Rodríguez, de 25 años y nacido en Guadalajara, fue trasladado a un hospital y sometido a una cirguía cerebral de urgencia, pero nunca recuperó el conocimiento.
Conocido como 'El Nino Azteca, 'Rodríguez, campeón nacional Guantes de Oro en 2001, tuvo una excelente carrera como púgil amateur y fue varias veces campeón de la ciudad de Chicago.
Se volvió profesional en 2005 y era uno de los favoritos de los fanáticos del boxeo de la ciudad de Chicago.
Autoridades en Filadelfia realizarán una autopsia el martes.
