El muro defensivo de Honduras aguantó 34 minutos, cuando un centro de Mauricio Isla desde la línea de fondo por la derecha llegó rasante al corazón del área. Beausejour empujó la pelota al fondo al llegar en atropellada ante la marca de un hondureño.En la reanudación, Chile mantuvo la intensidad, si bien sin las altas revoluciones del primer tiempo.Después de 48 años, Chile finalmente cantó victoria en una Copa del Mundo.
Gracias a un gol de Jean Beausejour a los 34 minutos, Chile venció el miércoles 1-0 a Honduras, pero el marcador final no reflejó en números lo que fue un dominio abrumador de principio a fin del equipo del técnico Marcelo Bielsa en el partido por el Grupo H.
Chile desplegó en la cancha del estadio Mbombela de Nelspruit el estilo puro que el argentino Bielsa ha impregnado desde que tomó las riendas del equipo: ataque frontal sin miramientos y presión asfixiante al rival.
La ausencia por lesión de su delantero Humberto Suazo, el máximo goleador de las eliminatorias sudamericanos, no alteró para nada la propuesta.
En su segundo Mundial y primero desde 1982, Honduras se limitó a defenderse patas arriba, y de hecho aguantó bien durante la primera media hora.
La resistencia duró hasta que un centro de Mauricio Isla desde la línea de fondo por la derecha llegó rasante al corazón del área para que Beausejour empujase la pelota al fondo al llegar en atropellada ante la marca de Sergio Mendoza.
En la reanudación, Chile mantuvo la intensidad, si bien sin las altas revoluciones del primer tiempo. La mala puntería (un remate de Alexis Sánchez demasiado cruzado) o una intervención providencial del arquero hondureño Noel Valladares (a un cabezazo de Waldo Ponce frente al marco) evitaron aumentar la cuenta.
Chile no había ganado un partido del Mundial desde 1962, cuando fue local del certamen. Su previa actuación fue en Francia 1998, donde empató sus tres partidos para clasificarse a la segunda ronda.
Se trata del primer partido de Honduras en un Mundial desde España 1982. Chile, cuyo previo Mundial fue el de Francia 1998, intenta conseguir su primera victoria desde que lo hizo cuando fue local en 1962.
