Casillas, de 28 años, defendió con éxito durante el curso pasado la condición de mejor portero del mundo que se ganó en 2008 y se convierte en el legítimo heredero del legendario Ricardo Zamora, que fue el mejor guardameta del mundo de la primera mitad del siglo XX. El portero español se ha proclamado gran vencedor de 2009 con una ventaja similar a la del año anterior sobre el italiano Gigi Buffon.
Los miembros del jurado, repartidos entre 84 países de todos los continentes, eligieron al portero de nacionalidad brasileña Julio César, del Inter de Milán, en tercera posición.
Julio Cesar, de 30 años, irrumpe así, definitivamente, en la élite mundial.
La afición del Valencia le gritó de todo, sin embargo la 'gota que derramó el vaso' e hizo perder los estribos a Iker Casillas fue un pequeño aficionado de 10 años.En el marco del choque entre Real Madrid y Valencia por la Liga, el guardameta merengue fue objeto de todo tipo de insultos y agresiones por parte de la parcialidad que se encontraba detrás de su portería durante el calentamiento. La situación llegó a tanto que Casillas dejó sus ejercicios para reconvenir a un chico que le gritaba palabras altisonantes.
El partido terminó empatado con una actuación sorprendentemente mala del portero de la selección española.

"En el Real Madrid siempre te piden más. Tenemos que ponernos las pilas cuanto antes, conocernos todos y mostrar un fútbol que a la gente le guste", aseguró el madridista en entrevista que publica el diario MARCA.
En una entrevista concedida a la estación de radio Radiogaceta de los Depotes, Casillas reconoció que le ilusiona lograr del 'doblete'. "La copa me quita la vida y si luego ya ganamos el Mundial pues me retiro y digo hasta luego", comentó.

Según la televisión inglesa, el gol de Juninho fue imparable y ningún portero lo hubiera parado. ¿Quién tiene razón? Yo no lo sé, pero se me antoja que Valdés, al menos, se tendría que haber movido. También se que estoy acostumbrada a leer que porteros como Casillas, Van der Saar o Peter Chec, o Buffon, salvan a sus equipos de manera constante. Pocas veces he visto a Valdés hacer lo propio –excepto en la final de la Champions de París, que no es poco.
