Frases insulsas e ignorantes como las anteriores se escuchan y leen cada vez que algún ídolo cae. Frases negligentes y necias como las precedentes salen de las mentes ardidas e inmaduras de los fanáticos sin sentido común que no soportan las derrotas, fanáticos egoístas que piensan que por dinero los peleadores se convierten en blanco fácil para el enemigo. Son frases insoportables y espinosas de aficionados que le hacen daño al deporte, que apoyan una imagen negativa de una disciplina herida que busca más bien escapar de este tipo de flechas maliciosas.

El peso ya no es el tema que domina. Ya Oscar de la Hoya y Manny Pacquiao se montaron en la báscula y ambos cumplieron con la reglamentación del límite de las 147 libras del peso welter y, curiosamente, quedaron los dos unas cuantas libras por debajo. Pacquiao hizo 142 y De la Hoya 145.

Ambos adujeron que las libras de menos tienen que ver con la velocidad. Ninguno de los dos quiere estar más pesado de la cuenta porque, según ellos, eso podría restarles algo de rapidez en los puños. Y también dieron el tema de la velocidad como el punto clave de lo que será esta pelea.

El ambiente en Las Vegas es un tanto híbrido. El sabor a boxeo no está del todo presente y falta algo en los pasillos del MGM Grand Hotel. "Yo he visto boxeo toda mi vida y no recuerdo haber visto un invento como este jamás", dijo César Trejo, mientras cobraba en el sitio de venta de comida dentro del fastuoso MGM. "Me parece que Pacquiao es un gran boxeador, pero no sé si subir tanto peso de golpe para una sola pelea le haga bien a nadie por más bueno que sea. No creo que sea una pelea de verdad. En la película 'Ladrón que Roba a Ladrón' un grupo ya cansado de las mentiras decide robar a unos mentirosos y ladrones más grandes que ellos y que, de paso, le han quitado mucho a gente de niveles económicos muy desdeñables. La línea temática del film es el tan retocado y remozado cuento que probablemente propulsó a la universidalidad la figura de Robin Hood.

Es un concepto por demás socialista este de robarle a los ricos para darle a los pobres.

Oscar de la Hoya le ha dado muchísimo al boxeo. Sus seis títulos en divisiones diferentes son plausibles y, aunque su record y rivales dejen dudas claras, no se niega que ha sido mejor que unos cuantos. Sin embargo, cuando el buen Oscar cae en las mismas artimañas de gente tan baja como Ricardo Mayorga, entonces sí provoca robarle al ladrón.

Primero fue el mexicano Antonio Margarito y ahora se ha sumado otro de los fuertes de las 147 libras en Miguel Cotto, al cúmulo de críticos de la pelea de Oscar de la Hoya contra Manny Pacquiao.

"Esta pelea es uno de los casos en los cuales uno se da cuenta de dónde ha caído el boxeo. El deporte está en el lugar donde se encuentra por culpa de peleas como ésta, por culpa de peleadores como De la Hoya", dijo Cotto en unas declaraciones exclusivas al diario puertorriqueño 'Primera Hora'.
